Stone Sour was founded by Corey Taylor, who later became the vocalist of Slipknot, and former drummer Joel Ekman. The band's name comes from a cocktail menu at a local bar. Taylor's longtime friend Shawn Economaki joined shortly after, and filled in as the bass player.

Drummer Joel Ekman (photo) has officially parted ways with his band Stone Sour, also featuring Slipknot members Corey Taylor and Jim Root. Main reason for Ekman\'s leaving is his nine-year-old son, who was diagnosed with brain stem glioma (brain cancer) and is very sick.
The band’s original drummer, Joel Ekman, left the band to care for his son after he was diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, his son died from the disease. Later, he would join a new band and ultimately, they memorialized Joel’s late son by naming the band in his honor...
Longtime members Joel Ekman, Shawn Economaki and Jim Root left the band in 2006, 2011 and 2014, respectively. Martucci and Chow were first featured with the band on the Burbank Duology.
Stone Sour was founded in 1992 by Slipknot's frontman Corey Taylor and their drummer Joel Ekman, later recruiting guitarist Jim Root. They took a long hiatus in 1997 after Slipknot blew up, then came together in 2002 to release their eponymous debut a decade after their formation.
