The fleur-de-lis, also spelled fleur-de-lys (plural fleurs-de-lis or fleurs-de-lys), is a common heraldic charge in the shape of a lily (in French, fleur and lis mean ' flower ' and ' lily ' respectively).

what is a fleur-de-lys: that is, to what flower or real object does it correspond? where does the name itself come from? This article provides answers and clues. My personal opinion is as follows: the design can be found in many places long before heraldic times, as far back as Mesopotamia.
While the fleur-de-lis means “lily flower” or “ flower of the iris”, it was meant to signify the power of the King and his purity of rule. It had been used since ancient times in Egypt, where it was believed to symbolize life and resurrection.
