John Aaron Rawlins was a lawyer and a Union general who served as Grant's assistant-adjutant general during the Civil War. He was appointed secretary of war in 1868, but died of tuberculosis before taking office.
They fell in with the Sixth Corps, commanded by “Uncle” John Sedgwick. Grant, wearing an unbuttoned uniform coat and accoutered with sword, spurs, and sash, was mounted on his large bay, Cincinnati. Rawlins, on Grant’s left, was astride General Blair, named after Frank Blair, a corps commander in the Army of the Tennessee.
Appointed U.S. Secretary of War, March 1869. Died in Washington, September 6, 1869; buried in Arlington National Cemetery. A statue, General John A. Rawlins was erected in Washington, D.C. in 1874. The town of Rawlins, county seat of Carbon County, Wyoming, is named for him, as well as Rawlins County, Kansas.
