Master Sessions, released in 1994 and featuring a superb cast including reedman Paquito D'Rivera, percussionist Francisco Aguabella, flutist Nestor Torres, and timbalero Orestes Vilato, represented Cachao's long overdue rediscovery.
The latest recording before this masterpiece was an anthology called Forty Years of Cuban Jam Session, a homage from Paquito D’Rivera, which contains Cachao’s autobiography in music. The telltale number is called “Descarga 93” and it begins with Cachao playing the double bass col arco.
The Master Sessions Volume II finally saw the light of day in 1995. The highlight of the second volume of the Master Sessions – which begins with another spectacular duet between Cachao and Paquito D’Rivera – is Cachao’s “Africa Suite” which begins with a primordial Yorubà chant.
