Mao (or Mau [2]) is a card game of the shedding family. The aim is to get rid of all of the cards in hand without breaking certain unspoken rules which tend to vary by venue. The game is from a subset of the Stops family and is similar in structure to the card game Uno or Crazy Eights. [3]

AUDIENCE: All Ages. INTRODUCTION TO MAO. Mao is a pesky and annoying game for those not in the know because no one tells you what is happening. The origin of the game is not known for sure, but it is most likely derived from the German card game Mau Mau. This theory is bolstered by the fact the game is also spelled as Mau. THE SET-UP.
Mao is half card game and half prank. The object of the game is to get rid of all of the cards in your hand by playing one card per turn. The biggest twist in this game is that you are not allowed to teach the rules to new players. They must figure it out by observing gameplay and making mistakes, hence the prank.
