Fue miembro fundador del grupo Weather Report, y ha tocado junto a músicos como Jan Hammer, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul o Jan Garbarek. Debido a diferencias personales, Vitouš abandonó Weather Report, siendo sustituido por el bajista Alphonso Johnson.
In 1979, Vitouš stepped back into the role of bandleader, recording and releasing First Meeting on ECM. 1980's Miroslav Vitous Group was later praised in a five-star review by John Kelman in All About Jazz as "exceptionally good."

Miroslav Vitouš Group is an album by the Miroslav Vitouš Group recorded in July 1980 and released on ECM February the following year. The quartet features saxophonist John Surman, pianist Kenny Kirkland, and drummer Jon Christensen.
