It starts at the beginning of one heartbeat and ends at the beginning of another. The process begins as early as the 4th gestational week when the heart first begins contracting.

Phases of the Cardiac Cycle. At the beginning of the cardiac cycle, both the atria and ventricles are relaxed (diastole). Blood is flowing into the right atrium from the superior and inferior venae cavae and the coronary sinus. Blood flows into the left atrium from the four pulmonary veins.
Every single heartbeat includes three major stages: atrial systole, ventricular systole, and complete cardiac diastole. Atrial systole is the contraction of the atria that causes ventricular filling. Ventricular systole is the contraction of the ventricles in which blood is ejected into the pulmonary artery or aorta, depending on side.
