Godard reformed the band and as 'Vic Godard and Subway Sect' finally released their debut album What's the Matter, Boy? in 1980, following a period of shifting group personnel. The album features many songs written during the previous incarnation of the band, but performed with radically altered arrangements.

By the time we got to record What’s The Matter Boy I didn’t want to do punk or anything that sounded like it, so that’s why I tried to rearrange all the songs into a different style.

When Vic Godard & Subway Sect recorded their debut album. They had a shedload of great songs. ... It would eventually lead him to Tin Pan Alley, a Cole Porter obsession, and Jo Boxers, but on What’s The Matter Boy? it led him somewhere else entirely, namely backwards roughly two decades to the 1950s.
