Santo & Johnny were an American rock and roll instrumental duo of Italian descent from Brooklyn, New York, composed of brothers Santo Farina (born October 24, 1937) and Johnny Farina (born April 30, 1941).
Santo would play steel guitar with Johnny accompanying him on traditional six-string, and that tape deck enabled the brothers to keep track of their compositions. In time they would pull together a piece called Sleep Walk – so named because when they couldn’t sleep they would stay up playing and recording.
"Sleep Walk" is an instrumental song written, recorded, and released in 1959 by American instrumental rock and roll duo Santo & Johnny Farina, with their uncle Mike Dee playing the drums. Prominently featuring steel guitar , the song was recorded at Trinity Music in Manhattan, New York City.
The Farina brothers, Santo & Johnny, were born in Brooklyn, New York. Santo, October 24, 1937 and Johnny, April 30, 1941. The boys were young when their Dad was drafted into the Army and stationed in Oklahoma. There on the radio he heard this beautiful music, it was the sound of the steel guitar.
28 de mar. de 2019 · I've been trying to approximate his sound but there's so little info other that what type of steels he played.....a Custom and a Stringmaster, the differences of which apparently didn't have a significant effect on his tone. If anything, his buzzy cutting tone is more apparent on later recordings.
Johnny Farina of Santo & Johnny (Two brothers from Brooklyn) Sleep Walk hit the airwaves in 1959, and added a new sound to Rock ‘n’ Roll, a steel guitar as the lead instrument, unheard of at that time, an instrument associated with country and Hawaiian music used in the background.
