While the soon-to-be-graduate Whitaker was soon to return to the US, Kennell wasn't due back for a while, but he gave Whitaker the contacts of two former members of his teenage band Zelda, back in Fort Wayne, Indiana: drummer Mike Beck and singer/flautist Cliff Fortney, who both agreed to move to Virginia.

The group was formed in 1974, and during the '70s featured keyboardist Kit Watkins, keyboardist/woodwind player Frank Wyatt, guitarist and occasional vocalist Stan Whitaker, and bassist Rick Kennell, plus a rotating succession of drummers. Original vocalist Cliff Fortney left the band before it signed to Arista.

When vocals were still part of Happy The Man’s repertoire, Cliff Fortney sang and played flute for the group. Cliff departed the band to concentrate on classical education with flute.
In mid-1960 Cliff Fortney hooked up with Rick Kennell and Mike Beck and began performing vocals, flute & harmonica with Zelda. The band had a real thirst for unusual music, especially since Cliff worked part time at a local record store. He and Rick were housemates and they would have their way - purchasing music with the weirdest looking album covers they could find.
