The songs on this record centre around a California theme, and they mix Russell's picturesque folk sagas with songwriting contributions from Peter Case, Chris Gaffney and Dave Alvin. The Woody Guthrie-esque "Somebody's Husband, Somebody's Son" features a vocal verse-swapping trio of Russell, Alvin and Case.
