Lead vocalist and guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach, bassist Chris Bauermeister, and drummer Adam Pfahler formed the band while students at New York University, later relocating to Los Angeles where they released their debut album Unfun (1990) through independent record label Shredder Records.

Adam Pfahler, born Frederick Adam Pfahler, IV, is a drummer who co-founded the punk rock/emo band Jawbreaker with bassist Chris Baumeister and lead vocalist and guitarist Blake.
Jawbreaker is a punk rock band formed in 1986, by then NYU students Blake Schwarzenbach, Chris Bauermeister, and Adam Pfahler. The band moved back to Los Angeles, in the members.
