The Symphony No. 2 in E minor, is one of the Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian's most well-known pieces of music. Completed in 1943, it was nicknamed The Bell or Symphony with Bells by Georgi Khubov for its bell motif that begins and ends the piece. A typical performance lasts about 50 minutes.
CPO 777 972-2 [71.34] Earlier this year, I reviewed a Russian recording of this symphony, conducted by Dimitri Yablonsky, with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra and this new recording makes an interesting contrast. The Symphony, sometimes called ‘The Bell’ from its opening and closing moments, is a piece which deserves attention.
