Our website will give you some information about the College and, we hope, a flavour of what life here is like. Knockbeg College is an all boys, non fee-paying, voluntary Catholic secondary school owned by the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin and approved by the Dept. of Education and Science.
St Mary's Knockbeg College (Irish: Coláiste Muire Cnoc Beag) is a Roman Catholic, all-boys secondary school located on the Laois/Carlow border in Ireland, approximately 3 km from both Carlow town and Graiguecullen, County Laois.
The Virgin Mary can also be seen in the school’s crest, the school’s full title is St, Mary’s Knockbeg College. As well as on the crest, St. Mary can be seen all over the school’s grounds, be it statues, murals or decorating the school walls, again solidifying the catholic ethos of the school.
Knockbeg College traces its foundation directly to the decision in 1782 by Bishop James Keeffe of the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin to open what would have been the first Catholic school in Ireland after the Penal Days, for “the education of Roman Catholic youth”, something generally forbidden by the Penal Laws.
