In early 1972, the core trio of Root Cartwright, Belinda Bourquin and David Jones, formed a new more rock-oriented band, with the abbreviated name of Principal Edwards. They were joined by musicians Richard Jones (bass, previously of the Climax Blues Band), Nick Pallett (guitar, vocals), and Geoff Nicholls (drums).
Guitarist Root Cartwright was always the driving force behind the band and here he really comes to the fore with some excellent proto-Tom Verlaine work, most notably on McAlpine Versus The Asmoto (there’s even a hint of C86 jangle pop here, Principal Edwards were surely ahead of their time!).
The group (which varied at times in size from eight to more than fifteen members) had been picked up by Copeland after the band’s label Dandelion folded in 1972 and core members Root Cartwright, Belinda Bourquin and David Jones dropped the ‘Magic Theatre’ portion of their name and hit the road with a more rock-oriented focus, a smaller lineup of six members and new material, in search of ...
