"Something Happened on the Way to Heaven" was written by Collins and his longtime touring guitarist Daryl Stuermer. It was the last song written for the album and was originally for the Four Tops , but it was not delivered to the group as Collins wanted to keep it for himself by the time it was finished. [10]

Stuermer’s versatile jazz work can be heard on nearly all of Collin’s albums (all of which were major hits) including 1981’s Face Value, 1985’s No Jacket Required, 1990’s But Seriously and 1996’s Dance into the Light.
