The tuba (UK: / ˈ tj uː b ə /; US: / ˈ t uː b ə /) is the largest and lowest-pitched musical instrument in the brass family.As with all brass instruments, the sound is produced by lip vibration – a buzz – into a mouthpiece.It first appeared in the mid-19th century, making it one of the newer instruments in the modern orchestra and concert band, and largely replaced the ophicleide.

The modern-day Tuba (or Bass Tuba to use its proper name) was invented in the early 19th century. It is descended from a number of historical instruments, including the Serpent and the Ophicleide. It has progressed from being an unusual and specialist instrument to being a standard part of the orchestral line-up, and a staple of modern brass bands.
