Taking the name Kapelye -- Yiddish for "a band" -- the musicians began researching and collecting klezmer recordings from the turn of the century. Their debut album, Future And Past, was released in 1981. Levine and His Flying Machine and Chicken followed in 1985 and 1987 respectively.
