The Tubes are a San Francisco-based rock band, whose 1975 debut album included the hit single, "White Punks on Dope". During its first fifteen years or so, the band's live performances combined quasi-pornography with wild satires of media, consumerism and politics.
The Tubes were arch satirists of popular culture whose outrageous performance-art concepts - which swung wildly from soft-core pornography to suit-and-tie conservatism - frequently eclipsed their elusive musical identity.

Their live shows featured bare flesh, dancing girls, roadies dressed as giant cigarettes and a prosthetic penis. Stranger still, they then had a run of pop hits in the 80s.
