The early School taught Latin, Greek and sciences, including arithmetic and geometry. At its peak in 1750-1800, it had a very good reputation for teaching Maths and getting boys into Cambridge, and attracted pupils from across the North of England and southern Scotland.

Wordsworth attended Hawkshead Grammar School from ages 8-16. The school was started in 1585 to educate the sons of Protestant families after the Reformation. It taught Latin and Greek grammar, arithmetic, geometry, sciences, modern history and the classics with the aim of preparing boys for entrance to Cambridge.
