This chapter serves as an introduction to the philosophical issues raised by quantum theory. It begins with a brief overview of the formalism of quantum theory. The so-called “measurement problem” is introduced, and the main approaches to it surveyed.
Quantum mechanics is a physical theory developed in the 1920s to account for the behavior of matter on the atomic scale. It has subsequently been developed into arguably the most empirically successful theory in the history of physics.
