In 1970, Motown producer Norman Whitfield – partly as a response to criticism from Temptations fans that he was using the group as his personal plaything – put together Joe Harris, Billie Calvin, and Brenda Evans to create his own recording act, The Undisputed Truth.
Brenda Joyce Evans leaves the group in ’73 and is replaced by Diane Evans. Her tenure is short and Whitfield takes her departure as a cue to remake the Truth. Harris and Calvin are joined by Tyrone Douglas, Tyrone Barkley and Virginia McDonald. Eventually, Calvin departs, too.
The newfound interest in her work inspired her to write more songs to perform, and in 1967 she released a record created with her grandchildren, which took its name from one of her songs, "Shake Sugaree". The song featured 12-year-old Brenda Joyce Evans, Cotten's great-grandchild, and future Undisputed Truth singer. [citation needed]
In 1991, Joe Harris and Brenda Evans, together with ex-Brainstorm vocalist Belita Woods, recorded a new version of 'Law Of The Land' on lan Levine's Motor City label. Albums: The Undisputed Truth (Gordy Records 1971)
