The band originally consisted of the Scroggins sisters, Renee (vocals), Valerie (drums), Deborah (bass) and Marie (congas, vocals) and friend Tito Libran (congas, vocals). The band's name stands for emerald, sapphire, and gold.

At the time, the neighbourhood had spent the best part of a decade on fire, losing an estimated 80% of its housing, and leaving 250,000 people displaced.
