Bailter Space (a.k.a. Bailterspace) is a New Zealand shoegaze and noise rock band that formed in Christchurch, in 1987 as Nelsh Bailter Space; they had previously recorded as The Gordons.

From late 1984 to 1986, the original line-up of The Gordons reformed and began recording material, which they later refused to release. During this late period, John Halvorsen joined the Skeptics, while in 1986, Alister Parker formed a new band initially called Nelsh Bailter Space.
Stripping the lineup down to just Kilgour on drums and old Gordons mate Halvorsen on bass, Parker and a revamped Bailter Space cooked up a full-length debut much closer in spirit to what '90s audiences were familiar with, while simultaneously distancing themselves from the ghost of the Gordons.

But it brought out the best from both, delivering a diversity of sound around an underlying common ground of post-punk discord and German early 1970s rhythms and beats.
Bailter Space countered The Gordons diagnosis of terminal illness with a second opinion that believed an antidote existed.
