Karl von Piloty was the foremost representative of the Realist style of painting in Germany. Piloty was the younger brother of Ferdinand Piloty, a noted lithographer. In 1840 he entered the Munich Academy as a student; two years later he studied under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld.

Karl Theodor von Piloty was a German painter, noted for his historical subjects, and recognised as the foremost representative of the realistic school in Germany. Piloty was born in Munich. His father, Ferdinand Piloty (d. 1844), enjoyed a great reputation as a lithographer.
This is a reduced replica of the painting commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869 and exhibited in the Weltausstellung, Vienna, in 1873 (Neue Pinakothek, Munich). Steinhardt-Hirsch (2003) catalogues four oil studies and numerous drawings for the original painting.
Biography. German painter. He received his first training from his father, the lithographer Ferdinand Piloty (1786-1844). In 1838 Piloty entered the Munich Akademie der Bildenden Künste and from 1840 became a pupil of Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld.
