Henry Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl of Powis PC (before 9 April 1703 – 10 September 1772), known as Henry Herbert until 1743 and as The Lord Herbert of Chirbury between 1743 and 1748, was a British peer and politician.
The Herbert earldom of Powis dates from 1674, when WILLIAM HERBERT (c.1626 - 1696), 3rd baron Powis, was created 1st earl. Sir EDWARD HERBERT (died 23 March 1595)
He was the son of the Right Reverend Percy Mark Herbert, Bishop of Blackburn and of Norwich, son of Major-General the Hon. William Henry Herbert, fifth son of the second Earl. As of 2020 [update] the peerages are held by his son, the 8th Earl, who succeeded in 1993.
The Herbert family is an Anglo-Welsh noble family founded by William Herbert, known as "Black William", the son of William ap Thomas, founder of Raglan Castle, a follower of Edward IV of England in the Wars of the Roses.

In 1587 Sir Edward bought Powis Castle (Y Castell Coch ym Mhowys) and the lordship of Powys from Edward Grey, the illegitimate son of Edward Grey (d. 1551), 4th baron Grey de Powis, and feudal lord of Powys. His son, William Herbert (1573-1656), was created 1st baron Powis.
In 1578, Powis was leased to Sir Edward Herbert (c.1542–95), the second son of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Anne Parr (sister of Catherine Parr, the sixth wife of Henry VIII). As a second son Edward was not likely to inherit his family home so he had to make his own way in the world.
