Government Issue (often referred to as G.I.) was a punk rock band from Washington, DC. The band formed in 1980 and split in 1989. They began as a hardcore band but overtime transitioned into more alternative rock sounds.
During the same war, "G.I.", reinterpreted as "government issue" or "general issue", began being used to refer to any item associated with the U.S. Army (e.g. "G.I. soap"). Other reinterpretations of "G.I." include "garrison issue" and "general infantry".
