Mud. 1966–1972: the early years. The band was founded by lead guitarist Rob Davis, [3] lead vocalist Les Gray, [3] drummer Dave Mount (born 3 March 1947, [3] Carshalton; died 2 December 2006, St Helier Hospital, Carshalton [4]) and bassist Ray Stiles (born 20 November 1946, [3] Guildford, Surrey).
RAY STILES. Ray Stiles started playing bass at the age of 14 on a guitar made by his dad. His musical influences were the beat groups of the early 60s; including The Hollies. He joined Mud in 1966 and turned professional in 1968. The band enjoyed fourteen top twenty hits, including three number one records, and performed all over the country.

Ray Stiles Bass guitar and vocals. Born 20th November 1946. Ray was very much the brainy one of the band, leaving school with a satchel full of ‘O’ levels, going on to the North London Polytechnic to study to be an architect. But even while he was studying, Ray dreamed of becoming a musician. Ray continues to tour as a member of the Hollies.
