The people behind the story. Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst purchased the Dartington estate in 1925, and initiated the ‘Dartington experiment’, setting up a host of farming, forestry and educational projects. Early initiatives included Dartington Hall School, Dartington Tweed Mill and later Dartington Glass. Dartington also rapidly became a magnet for artists, architects, writers, philosophers and musicians from around the world, creating an exceptional centre of creative activity.
There is an assembly hall, library and studio linked by open air rooms and a loggia at the opposite end of the quadrangle. Dartington was a progressive, liberal co-educational school.
