Known for. his numerous escapes from prison and his crimes of theft and burglary, a biography of which is thought to have been ghostwritten by Daniel Defoe. John "Jack" Sheppard (4 March 1702 – 16 November 1724), or "Honest Jack", was a notorious English thief and prison escapee of early 18th-century London.

Here, John seals his fate by accusing Danforth, Parris, and the other officials of acting against the will of God in believing Abigail. This scene also marks the moment that Reverend Hale abandons the trials, seeing them for the farce they are.
John has privately confessed, in Act Three, to adultery with Abigail Williams, the teenage accuser who instigated the trials. When Elizabeth is brought into court, she refuses, in an outrageously rigged interview, to implicate her husband as a lecherous man.
