Hace 8 horas · In this chapter, I show how two Romantic poets, Charlotte Smith and John Clare, wrote a different kind of lyric poetry. Smith and Clare are particularly renowned for their sonnets, in which the self is certainly not its own creator. In Smith’s Elegiac Sonnets (1784–1800), argues Christopher Stokes, ‘the lyric “I” faces its own loss or lack of self-identity’.
