My concern is how easily the axle shaft slides in and out. There is a little snap ring at the end of the axle shaft (at the differential) that holds that axle in. Either it popped out and you need to push it in all the way to stay connected, or the shaft is broken or the splines are stripped. I would pull the axle completely out to be sure.
