Hace 2 días · (Actually, I think Þorvaldsdóttir’s music is a better commentary on Rothko’s paintings—though it isn’t trying to be—than the piece actually inspired by the Chapel, by Morton Feldman.) As Fosse’s paintings are a remarkable synthesis of the traditional and the modernist novel, so Þorvaldsdóttir’s music is a synthesis of classical orchestration with post-modernist timbres.

But the couple's greatest contribution to Houston is their own museum, the Menil Collection, which opened in 1987, fourteen years after John's passing.

In it, I reconstruct the network of artists, musicians, and patrons who collaborated on the event: composer Feldman, painter Mark Rothko, violist Karen Philips, and the patrons Dominique and John de Menil.

His heart, however, is at Chapel of the Daughters of Charity in the Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, also in Paris.
Hace 3 días · According to the Loretto Chapel’s official website, the man only used “simple tools and wooden pegs. The rare wood is not native to the American Southwest.” They know he used a type of spruce wood, but no one knows where it came from or how the carpenter got it.
