Harvard College ( AB) Joseph Story (September 18, 1779 – September 10, 1845) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1812 to 1845. He is most remembered for his opinions in Martin v. Hunter's Lessee and United States v.

Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story not only became Dane Professor at Harvard Law School while serving on the Court. In addition, like all Supreme Court justices in his era, he also sat on a federal Circuit Court.
Joseph Story was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts on September 18, 1779. His father, Elisha Story, was a prominent local doctor and his mother, Mehitable Pedrick Story, was a homemaker. Joseph was one of eighteen children and the oldest of his father’s second marriage.
