In 1977 he appeared on Johnny Winter 's album Nothin' But The Blues along with Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, and others. In 1978, he made a guest appearance on Big Joe Duskin 's debut album, Cincinnati Stomp, on Arhoolie Records.

By 1978, and with the reputation for his concert playing now growing, his first recording, Cincinnati Stomp, was released on Arhoolie Records. The album contained Duskin's cover version of "Down the Road a Piece" and featured Jimmy Johnson and Muddy Waters's guitarist Bob Margolin.
Ben Sandmel was raised in Cincinnati and now works in New Orleans as a journalist, drummer and folklore researcher. Thanks to Steve Tracy, Bob Margolin, Lucy Bukowski, Erwin Helfer and the late Dan Ransohoff for their help back in the '70s.
