The novel was adapted into the film Mr. Pip in 2012. The novel is set against the backdrop of the civil war on Bougainville Island during the early 1990s.

Años 90. Sinopsis. Hacia 1991, durante los primeros compases de la guerra civil que asoló la remota isla de Bougainville (Papúa Nueva Guinea), el señor Watts (Hugh Laurie), un excéntrico hombre blanco, decide reabrir las puertas de la escuela y ejercer de maestro.
The “redskin” officer forces his rebel captive to identify the fugitive Pip, and the man points to Mr. Watts’s house. The soldiers shoot Mr. Watts and then chop him up with machetes. In a show of power, the officer then asks who saw this act of violence, punishing anybody who admits to having witnessed the heinous act.
