The Werowocomoco research team established an important partnership with Virginia Indians, an effort led by William and Mary professor Danielle Moretti-Langholtz. As a result, the work at Werowocomoco is the first archeological project to take place with the sustained guidance and participation of Virginia Indians.
Werowocomoco, translated from the Virginian Algonquian language, means “place of leadership”. It is not yet open to the public while the National Park Service collaborates on a planning process with American Indian tribes in Virginia. In fact, archeology suggests that the shoreline was the most heavily occupied part of the town.
