Clemente was born in Naples, Italy, in 1952. The cosmopolitan tradition of the city, and his early schooling in Latin and Greek, influenced his aesthetic and intellectual sensibility. In 1970, he moved to Rome to study architecture, against the backdrop of the social, political, and economic upheavals that transformed Italian society after 1968.
29 de abr. de 2024 · Clemente often worked in large cycles or series, and in one such series, Francesco Clemente Pinxit (1981), he collaborated with Indian artists trained in miniature painting traditions on a series of 24 works that combined indigenous Indian imagery with more-contemporary subject matter.
Both Clemente’s life and work have long been invested in fluidity and indeterminacy, and he has actively resisted participating in any social order. Informed by such diverse practices as Beat poetry, the Tantra traditions of India and Tibet, the ritualism of Joseph Beuys, and Greco-Roman art, Clemente has forged a singular career that seeks intercultural resonance.
