Certain activities, such as driving, may be more difficult with a broken arm.
Symptoms. A loud cracking or snap is usually the first sign your arm is broken. It also may appear deformed, swollen, bruised or bleed. Other symptoms include extreme pain, increased pain with movement and loss of normal use of the arm. To slow bleeding and reduce swelling, raise the injured arm above the level of your heart.
Causes. Most of the time, a broken arm is caused by trauma. In younger people, common causes are falls from a height, sports injuries and motor vehicle accidents. In older people with weaker bones, a trip and fall from a standing height is a common cause of a broken arm.
In most cases of adult forearm fractures, both bones are broken. Fractures of the forearm can occur near the wrist at the farthest (distal) end of the bone, in the middle of the forearm, or near the elbow at the top (proximal) end of the bone. This article focuses on fractures that occur in the middle segments of the radius and ulna.
