After hearing the song umteen times, reading the lyrics, and realizing this, it sent chills down my spine. Sting is a hell of a lyracist, with one hell of an imagination. Adding to last comment- found 1 line wrong here- should be- "Daddy grips the wheel and stares alone into the distance" - the word alone adds emphasis to his ambivolence of feeling towards anyone.

The Police first recorded it on the very first day of the Outlandos d'Amour recording sessions - 1978-01-15. The band spliced together the two takes from that day on 1978-01-17. This 4:26 minute version is very different to the LP version.

Sting already recorded this song with Last Exit.Their recording features a verse that's not on The Police's version, and is also not featured on Sting's demo which he recorded in Dublin in the summer of 1980 (which is closer in style to The Police's version).. Just like Demolition Man this song was not used for Zenyatta Mondatta, as it was considered too sentimental.
