Der Roman Das Phantom der Oper (The Phantom of the Opera) von Gaston Leroux aus dem Jahr 1911 wurde 1975 erstmals als Musical aufgeführt. De liedteksten zijn geschreven door Charles Hart met enige toevoegingen van Richard Stilgoe. De oorspronkelijke versie van de musical werd geregisseerd door Hal Prince.
