El Malamute de Alaska es un perro grande e imponente con aspecto de lobo y características típicas de la raza Spitz (una cola curvada, un pelaje muy grueso, orejas erectas y una cabeza en forma de cuña). El Malamute macho mide de 64 a 71 cm en la edad adulta y la hembra, de 58 a 66 cm. El peso varía entre los 38 y los 56 kg.
