Focusing adverbs point to a particular part of a clause. Most common examples are: also, just, even, only, mainly, mostly, either, neither etc. Position. As focusing adverbs point to a particular part of a sentence, the meaning conveyed often depends upon their position.
Adverbs can modify adjectives, but an adjective cannot modify an adverb.Thus we would say that "the students showed a really wonderful attitude" and that "the students showed a wonderfully casual attitude" and that "my professor is really tall, but not "He ran real fast.". Like adjectives, adverbs can have comparative and superlative forms to show degree.
WITH. Focusing adverbs can "point to" any part of the sentence, but they most commonly point to (focus on) the verb phrase. They may occur next to (before) the phrase they refer to, or they may occur in a clause after. (See Sentence Position .) We can state the sentence without a focusing adverb, but its attention-getting effect will be lost!
