Jean-Michel Basquiat, Self-Portrait, 1985. Acrylic, oil stick, crown cork and bottle caps on wood. 142 × 153 × 15 cm (55 7/8 × 60 1/4 × 5 7/8 in). There are only a handful of paintings, however, in which he explicitly depicted himself. The present lot, his 1985 self-portrait, is therefore a rare, mature autobiographical work.

Basquiat first achieved fame as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1970s where the hip hop, punk, and street art movements had coalesced.
