I was born 24 February 1909, in Sauk City, a small, largely German village, pleasantly situated on the west bank of the Wisconsin River in south central Wisconsin, one of two children of William Julius and Rose Louise (Volk) Derleth, who were, respectively, of French-Bavarian and Prussian-Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry.
