Después C. S. Lewis sufrió de depresión, y cuando su salud mejoró, fue destinado a Andover, Inglaterra. En diciembre de ese año fue dado de baja del ejército y pudo continuar con sus estudios. Durante 1919, aparece su primera publicación Sprits in Bondage, un libro de poemas, que fue editado bajo el seudónimo de Clive Hamilton.
