He was the eldest child of teacher Martha 'Millie' Sutcliffe and senior civil servant Charles Sutcliffe. The family moved to Liverpool in 1943 when Charles needed to help with the war effort, and after the end of the war, Charles signed up as a ship's engineer.

As noted by his biography in the Beatles Bible, Sutcliffe's art skills were evident from a young age, and he would go on to enroll at the Liverpool College of Art — the photo above shows one of his paintings at an auction.

Stuart Sutcliffe, the brilliant young painter who was a bass guitarist with The Beatles in their early period, died on this day of a brain haemorrhage.
