Alfred Jules Ayer was born in London in 1910 into a wealthy European family. A solitary child growing up, Ayer spent much of his formative years at boarding school, eventually studying at Eton College. After proving a bright, inquisitive, and charismatic student at Eton, he obtained a scholarship to study classics at Christ Church college, Oxford.
