Carl Rogers argumenta que las personas en ocasiones desarrollan problemas porque se han acostumbrado a recibir únicamente apoyo condicional; solo si se cumplen determinadas expectativas. Al generar un entorno de aceptación positiva incondicional, la persona se permite expresar sin miedo a ser rechazada.
