Mir Mahmud Hotaki era el hijo mayor de Mirwais Kan Hotak, el líder de los ghilzai de Qandahar, en lo que es el sur de Afganistán. Hotak is buried in his mausoleum in the Kokaran section of Kandahar. He is regarded as one of Afghanistan's greatest national heroes and admired by many Afghans, especially the Pashtuns.
